Examining what soil is physically and the contrast to what that means politically, and after being accused of vandalism and theft we decided to steal a cubic foot of soil from France and transport it over the border, into the UK. The trip was documented with photographs and video.

The soil was installed in a small glass room in Kent institute of Art and Design. The room was well lit and unlocked, and the soil lay in an open bag that was placed in the middle of the room. A small television was running a video document of the trip, outside the room but facing towards the inside.

Entering the room let you smell the soil, and see the video directly through the glass, if you remained outside in the dark, the soil appeared somehow quarantined – but lit up like something holy, and the video was still watchable from its reflection on the room’s glass walls.
